About Cheryl Hill
I grew up in Oregon City, a suburb outside of Portland, Oregon. I spent much of my childhood with my nose in various books, but living in a family of nature-lovers and hikers, I always ended up spending a lot of time outdoors too. My parents made sure to take my sister and me on lots of camping trips and family vacations, and I inherited their love of both travel and the outdoors.
I always enjoyed taking snapshots at summer camp and in college. But it wasn't until I moved to British Columbia in January 2004 that I started exploring nature photography with my new digital camera. Surrounded by some of the most incredible scenery on the planet, I ended up taking well over 10,000 pictures during my two years in Vancouver. I learned as I went, but I was too busy getting my master's degree to spend a lot of time studying the art of photography.
That changed when I moved back to Portland in December 2005. Having only part-time work, I found myself with plenty of time to go hiking, take pictures, and learn a little something about taking good photographs. I took a short photography course from a local pro and shortly thereafter bought my first DSLR, a Nikon D40. I take it out nearly every week, wandering the trails of the Columbia River Gorge in winter and spring, and exploring the wilderness of the Cascade Mountains in the summer and fall. I love where I live and am constantly striving to capture the beauty of this amazing place I get to call home.
During my day job, I'm a librarian at several public libraries, a job which I love with all my heart.
